The hardness of a material as determined by forcing an indenter into the surface of a material under very light load; usually the indentations are so small that they must be measured with a microscope. Capable of determining hardnesses of different micro constituents within a structure, or of measuring steep hardness gradients such as those encountered in case hardening. A micro indentation hardness test using a calibrated machine to force a diamond indenter of specific geometry, under a test load of 1 to 1000 gram-force, into the surface of the test material and to measure the diagonal or diagonals optically. |

Rockwell Hardness | rockwell hardness testers, rockwell hardness testers, rockwell, hardness, tester
The Rockwell scale is a hardness scale based on the indentation hardness of a material. The Rockwell test determines the hardness by measuring the depth of penetration of an indenter under a large load compared to the penetration made by a preload. There are different scales, which are denoted by a single letter, that use different loads or indenters. The result, which is a dimensionless number, is noted by HRX where X is the scale letter. When testing metals, indentation hardness correlates linearly with Atensile strength. This important relation permits economically important nondestructive testing of bulk metal deliveries with lightweight, even portable equipment, such as hand-held Rockwell hardness testers. |

Brinell Hardness | brinell hardness testers, brinell hardness testers, brinell, hardness, tester
The Brinell scale characterizes the indentation hardness of materials through the scale of penetration of an indenter, loaded on a material test-piece. It is one of several definitions of hardness in materials science. |

Portable Hardness Testing is a widely used method for determining hardness of materials using test methods such as Vickers, Brinell, Knoop, Rockwell, Shore and IRHD. Portable hardness testers come in a variety of types with the ability to test most metals, alloys and plastics ranging from soft polymers and rubbers to engineering alloys designed for use in the most arduous conditions or most severe operating environments. |
